Rent-to-Own License

A Rent-to-Own (RTO) license is a hybrid licensing model that allows users to make recurring payments for software over time with the option to gain full ownership after a certain number of payments. Unlike standard subscription models, where access ends when the subscription is canceled or unpaid, RTO models provide a path to perpetual ownership once the agreed-upon term or amount is fulfilled.

This model appeals to users who want to eventually own the software but may not be able to afford a large upfront purchase. It provides financial flexibility while incentivizing long-term customer retention. Rent-to-Own licensing systems must be capable of tracking payment milestones, transitioning licenses from temporary to permanent status, and enforcing conditions during the rental period.

iLok Licensing supports Rent-to-Own models through configurable license state management and upgrade path that transitions from timed to perpetual entitlements.
